All the evidence suggests that tweens and young teenagers should not have access to a smartphone (with all the trials and tribulations) until they are mature enough to do. I’m starting a movement among parents.
I’m the author of Rookie Father, released by Familius Publishing in 2022, and it is my core belief that the decision to give a child a smartphone should be approached with caution. Providing a child with one bears the owner with the responsibility to manage social media, photo sharing, texting, etc. It is my belief that the decision to give their child a smartphone is best left until a teenager enters 10th grade.
I’ve started a group that I hope turns into a movement: NO SMARTPHONES THROUGH 9TH. This FB page shares facts (from studies and articles) plus anecdotes so parents can make a decision that works best for their families. If enough mothers and fathers take the pledge it may start a movement.

My suggestion – let kids be kids – there’s no going back once a child has a smartphone in their hands. I hope you’ll check out the group and feel free to join this initiative.
